When Both Parents Are Discipled in Biblical Parenting, Everything Changes

Christian parenting isn’t meant to be a solo effort. When both mom and dad are discipled and walking in God’s truth together, everything changes—from the tone in your home to the legacy your children inherit.

Unity in parenting doesn’t mean agreeing on everything. It means anchoring yourselves in the same foundation: God’s Word.

In this post, we’ll explore why discipling both parents is a powerful part of Biblical parenting and how you can take simple steps to grow together as a couple while raising your kids with faith and purpose.

And, for those of you who are single parents, we don’t want you to despair and write this article off.  I (Lori) grew up in a single-parent home for most of my growing-up years. I realize how difficult that journey can be.  God provided discipleship “team members” for me while I was growing up. They came alongside me and provided incredible discipleship and guidance, and additional support for my mom. (You can read more about that here.)John and I have also had the privilege to work alongside many single parents in our ministry through Artios.  Over and over, we have seen God provide additional “team members” to join in and support single parents in their journey of discipling their precious children. So, please keep reading!  These ideas apply to you too!

Why Parenting as a Couple Matters in God’s Design

Parenting can feel like a tug-of-war, especially when you’re not moving in the same direction. Maybe one parent leans more toward grace, the other toward discipline. One wants routine; the other wants flexibility. Conflict is easy. Unity takes intention.

But when both parents are growing in Biblical wisdom, a shift happens. You start speaking the same language. You move as a team. And your kids? They see it. They feel the difference. That’s where godly parenting becomes a legacy.

Two Voices, One Mission

The Legacy Parenting Podcast brings you both a father’s voice and a mother’s perspective—real conversations rooted in Scripture, not trends.

We don’t just want to encourage moms. We want to equip families. Biblical parenting isn’t one-sided—it’s a calling for all parents to rise, lead, and love with God’s truth at the center.

How to Grow Together as Christian Parents

Here are three simple ways to start walking in unity as a parenting team:

  • Listen to Truth Together
Pick one episode of the Legacy Parenting Podcast to listen to together. Each podcast episode is between 15-20 minutes.  That means that even one episode can spark meaningful conversation and shared vision.

  • Pray for a Shared Spirit
Ask God to unite your hearts in your parenting journey. Even if you’re not in the same place spiritually, prayer invites Him into the process.

  • Try One Small Strategy as a Team
Whether it’s a new way to set boundaries, a change in tone, or a new understanding of a foundational Biblical parenting principle, start small. One united step has more impact than ten solo ones.

A Note for the Parent Going It Alone

If you’re parenting solo right now, don’t tune out. God sees you. He’s equipping you. And His Spirit is more than enough to fill the gap.  Pray for God to bring godly mentors into your children’s lives and to give you added support. But be picky! Please read our article on choosing a mentor or listen to the upcoming podcast episode on the same topic. In addition, you might want to read about one of the godly mentors that God brought into my own life as I was growing up in a single-parent household.  Each step mentioned above can be shared with a mentor who becomes a fellow team member with you.

You can still lead your children with faith, and your obedience will plant seeds for generations to come.

"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."
Ecclesiastes 4:12

Build Your Parenting Legacy—Together

Christian parenting is most potent when both parents are being discipled. Not because you’ll always agree, but because you’re united in the same mission: raising your kids on the unshakable foundation of God’s Word.

Listen to the Legacy Parenting Podcast and take your next faithful step—together.
